For Bachelor’s, Master’s, and All Degree-Level Applicants
Studying in Portugal is an increasingly popular choice for Pakistani students. The country offers affordable tuition, internationally recognised degrees, and a well-defined immigration pathway. This guide covers every official step — from university admission to receiving your residence card in Portugal — based on verified government and embassy sources.
What Visa Do You Need?
Pakistani students enrolling in a full-time degree programme must apply for the National Long-Stay Visa for Study Purposes, also known as the National D Visa.
This visa allows you to:
Enter Portugal legally
Stay for more than 90 days
Apply for a residence permit after arrival
Important: This is not a Schengen short-stay visa. It is a national visa that leads to a residence card. Always confirm the visa category with the Embassy of Portugal in Pakistan or the official Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa portal before you begin.
Step 1: Get Admitted to a Portuguese University
Your visa application cannot begin without a confirmed place at a Portuguese higher education institution. You must have either:
An unconditional admission letter, or
An official enrollment confirmation
The document must clearly state:
Your full name
Degree type (Bachelor’s or Master’s)
Course title
Programme start date and duration
Tuition fee details
Documents Required by Degree Level
Bachelor’s Applicants
Higher Secondary School Certificate (FSc / A-Levels or equivalent)
Full academic transcripts
Certified English or Portuguese translations (if required)
Master’s Applicants
Bachelor’s degree certificate
Full undergraduate transcripts
Updated CV
Research proposal (if required by the university)
Relevant experience letters (if applicable)
Certified translations of all documents (if required)
Step 2: Prepare Your Visa Documents
The exact list must always be confirmed through the Embassy of Portugal in Pakistan and VFS Global at the time of your application. The standard requirements for 2026 are as follows.
A. Core Application Documents
Completed and signed national visa application form
Valid passport with at least two blank pages
Passport validity must extend beyond your intended stay
Two recent passport-sized photographs (as per VFS specifications)
B. Academic Documents
Official admission or enrollment letter from the Portuguese university
Tuition payment proof (if available)
Academic certificates and transcripts as applicable to your degree level
Certified translations into Portuguese or English (if required by the checklist)
C. Financial Proof
Portugal requires you to demonstrate that you can support yourself financially throughout your studies.
2026 Reference Amount:
Portugal’s minimum wage rose to €920 per month on 1 January 2026
You must show at least €11,040 for one full year of living expenses
Add your tuition fees on top of this amount
Always verify the current official figure on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa portal before submitting
Accepted Forms of Financial Proof:
Personal bank statements (last 3 to 6 months)
Sponsor letter with sponsor’s bank statements and CNIC copy
Scholarship award letter (must clearly state amount and duration)
Financial responsibility declaration
Key Tips:
Funds must be in liquid, accessible form
Avoid large recent lump-sum deposits — these attract scrutiny
Your financial history must be consistent and credible
D. Accommodation Proof
You must show where you will be living in Portugal. Accepted documents include:
University residence confirmation
Signed rental agreement
Host declaration
Provisional accommodation bookings may be acceptable at the initial stage — confirm this with VFS at the time of your appointment.
E. Health Insurance
Your insurance must:
Cover medical expenses and repatriation
Be valid for the entire Schengen area
Cover the full period of your visa validity
F. Police Clearance Certificate
Obtain from the relevant Pakistani authority (typically NADRA or the Federal Investigation Agency)
May need to be attested through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Translation may be required depending on the embassy checklist
Allow several weeks to obtain this — do not leave it until the last moment
Step 3: Submit Your Application Through VFS Global
All Portugal visa applications from Pakistan are submitted through VFS Global. You cannot apply directly at the Embassy.
How to Apply:
Visit the official Portugal section of the VFS Global Pakistan website
Create an account and fill in the visa application form
Upload documents online if pre-submission is required
Book an in-person appointment at the Visa Application Centre
Pay the official visa fee (confirm the current amount on the VFS website)
Attend your appointment in person
At Your Appointment:
Submit all original documents with clear photocopies
Provide biometrics (fingerprints and photograph)
You may be asked questions about your study plans and finances
Important: Visa fees must be confirmed directly on the VFS website. Do not rely on third-party sources for fee amounts.
Processing Time: What Pakistani Applicants Must Know
Processing times in Pakistan are significantly longer than in many other countries.
The Embassy of Portugal in Islamabad requires a minimum of 90 days to process an application
This can be extended by a further 60 days if more examination is needed
In exceptional cases, an additional 90-day extension may apply
Apply at least four to five months before your course start date.
For a September intake, your VFS appointment should be booked no later than April or May. Do not book your flights until you have the visa in hand.
After Visa Approval: Preparing to Travel
When your visa is approved:
You will receive a visa sticker in your passport
The national study visa allows two entries
It is valid for a period of four months
You must enter Portugal and complete AIMA registration within this four-month window
Before You Travel:
Double-check all visa dates and entry conditions
Book your flight within the visa validity window
Carry all original documents in your hand luggage — never in checked baggage
Print your university admission letter and accommodation confirmation to present at the border
Step 4: After Arrival in Portugal — Register with AIMA
Your national visa is an entry document, not a residence card. After arriving in Portugal, you must apply for a residence permit through AIMA (Agência para a Integração, Migrações e Asilo), the authority that replaced SEF as Portugal’s immigration body.
A residence permit is mandatory for any stay exceeding 120 days.
How to Register:
Book an appointment through the official AIMA online portal immediately after arrival
Attend the appointment and submit your documents
Provide biometrics
Pay the residence permit fee
Receive your residence card upon approval
Documents Required at the AIMA Appointment:
Passport with valid visa
University admission letter and proof of active enrollment
Proof of accommodation
Proof of financial means
Valid health insurance
University registration certificate
Can Students Work in Portugal?
Yes, but with conditions:
Non-EU students with a valid residence permit may work up to 20 hours per week during term time
Full-time work is permitted during official university vacation periods
You must maintain active student status at all times
Employment must comply with your immigration authorisation conditions
Part-time income cannot replace the proof of funds required during the visa application stage
Confirm your exact work authorisation conditions once your residence card has been issued.
2026 Regulatory Updates
AIMA Has Replaced SEF
All immigration appointments, residence permit applications, and related services are now handled by AIMA
Online scheduling is standard — use only the official AIMA portal at aima.gov.pt
Financial Reference Values Are Updated Annually
The minimum monthly subsistence amount is linked to Portugal’s national minimum wage
The current 2026 figure is €920 per month
Always verify the figure on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa portal before your submission
Transitional Validity Measures
Certain residence documents expiring during 2025 were granted extensions into 2026
These do not remove the obligation to apply for a proper permit
If you are unsure whether any measure applies to you, contact AIMA directly
